Rainy Wednesday

Summer in New York is crazy hot. I'm not exaggerating. It goes up to 103'F (40'C) sometimes. The sweltering heat causes beads of sweat to trickle down your forehead. Within minutes of leaving the house, you're perspiring. The subway stations are worse because there's so much heat trapped underground, you feel like you're standing in a furnace.

Occasionally, a train rushes through the tracks, sending waves of cool air that quickly vanishes within seconds. Anyway, you get the hint. It's been so hot in New York, New Yorkers were actually wishing for some rain to neutralize the heat... and today, it poured.

I was doing some shopping by myself on Steinway Street, which is about 15 minutes from where I live. I took my own time at the shops and did some productive shopping. Found a cute dress for $8 and a pretty blouse for $12, along with an adorable pair of wedges for $16! I was just about to walk over to the subway to meet Aida so we could go to the mall together, and that was when the skies decided to open up and release massive showers of rain.

I took shelter inside a bank while it thundered and poured outside. People were scurrying around in the rain. As the minutes passed, the rain got heavier. Claps of lightning flashed across the gray sky. Large pools of water formed on the roads. I stayed in the bank, hoping to meet a kind soul with an umbrella who would take me across the street to the subway station. And then this guy appeared with a large umbrella, so I approached and asked for help. He was generous enough to share his umbrella with me. He led me to the subway station and we parted ways.

During the 2 weeks I've been here, I've met some really nice New Yorkers. It's unfair to generalize all New Yorkers as mean or rude. That's an international stereotype of New Yorkers, just because they're always in a hurry. I mean, some New Yorkers can be pretty mean, but not everyone's a conceited prick. New York's filled with kind souls, and I'm glad to have met many of them. :)
