Savoring the Season

by Carissa Gan

The sky cracked one evening,
spilling warm hues over the earth.
The leaves drank the colors,
and leftovers dripped to the ground,
littering the grass with reds, oranges and yellows.
The sky cracked one evening,
pouring its sunset over the mountain crests.
The clouds whispered to each other,
their breaths as light and cool as the sunset breeze,
carrying the secrets of the sky through the valleys.
The sky cracked one evening,
bathing the garden in a glorious glow.
Bursts of golden rays filtered through the leaves,
as the kids carved pumpkins near the white wooden fence
while their mother sipped warm apple tea on the patio.
She gazed at the beauty of the evening,
at the oak tree shedding its leaves,
at the looming mountains in the distance,
and her senses were calmed
by the gentle breeze whistling through her hair,
by the smell of apples and fresh tea,
by the warmth of her cotton cardigan
by the toasty shades of the season
and by the sweet taste of autumn on her lips.
