Another world

My Media & Society professor once said:
"I don't like to watch TV series. Why waste precious hours of your life in front of a screen watching other people have a life?"

But what if you want a temporary escape from the trials you're facing in your life?

Some of us turn to movies and TV shows as an escapade into the dramatic lives of fictitious characters. It's entertaining to see Allie and Noah finally reunited after years of separation, or Kyle XY with no belly button discovering how he was really created.

When the going gets really tough, it's so easy to get lost in the lives of others, even if they aren't real. For once, our concentration isn't on our worries, but on the interesting characters on the screen and the predicaments they're enduring.

And when the movie ends, we look for more movies to indulge in - anything that takes our mind off our sullen reality.

These fictitious events trigger emotions that we yearn for. Joy. Relief. Excitement. Inspiration. Hope.

It may not be a healthy way of dealing with the truth, but sometimes, people need a little bit of relief from the things they face, even if the relief they seek is temporary.

Titanic

I watched Titanic yesterday and I bawled like a baby.

I first saw this movie in 1997 when it was released. I was only 7, so as a mere child watching such an intense, riveting movie, I was unable to develop an emotional attachment to it then.

But yesterday, I was shamelessly sobbing away throughout the movie. I sobbed when chaos broke out. I sobbed when the ship sank. I sobbed when Jack spoke his last words to Rose.

My favorite scene would have to be the one of Jack and Rose, when they'd fallen into the freezing ocean and Jack sacrificed his life so Rose could live. He asked her to get on the floating piece of wood that was just enough for one person, and he waited by her side with 90% of his body submerged in the ice cold water.

They were shivering violently, and Rose whispered, "I love you, Jack."

Jack stared at her for a moment, and firmly said, "Don't you do that, don't say your goodbyes."

Rose replied, "I'm so cold."

"Listen, Rose. You're gonna get out of here," Jack told her. His teeth were chattering but he was determined to go on. "You're gonna go on and make lots of babies, and you're gonna watch them grow. You're gonna die an old... an old lady warm in her bed, but not here. Not this night. Not like this, do you understand me?"

"I can't feel my body," Rose croaked.

"Winning that ticket, Rose, was the best thing that ever happened to me," Jack continued. "It brought me to you. And I'm thankful for that, Rose. I'm thankful. You must do me this honor, Rose. Promise me you'll survive. That you won't give up, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose, and never let go of that promise."

"I promise," Rose whispered.

"Never let go," Jack said.

Those were his last words to her.

Rose's final words to him were, "I'll never let go. I'll never let go, Jack."

Well, all this while I thought that Jack and Rose were a real couple who died at the tragic scene. But just today I discovered that they were fictional characters because the movie needed a front line to focus on, apart from the ship's tragedy.

I feel like a little girl who has just been told that Santa Claus doesn't exist, because for so many years, I held to heart that Jack and Rose were the sweetest couple in the world - sweeter than Allie and Noah from The Notebook.

Well, Titanic still claims first place in my heart as the greatest love story ever told, no matter how fictitious it may be. It's a powerful tearjerker that lives on forever.

I wouldn't mind watching it a thousand times.

Breaking Dawn

I wasn't a Twilight fan until tonight.

I never read the books. I wasn't for Team Edward or Team Jacob, I was for Team Bella (whoever she chose to be with). I didn't care whether Edward glistened under the sunlight or that Jacob was shirtless half the time. Yeah, the guy has to-die-for abs, but enough with the shirtless scenes already.

Thankfully, Breaking Dawn Part 1 was centered around Edward and Bella's relationship. The pretty boy and his pale beauty claimed the scenes this time, while Bella's tan hunky admirer only watched from the sidelines.

It was the best Twilight movie I've seen so far. I mean, there were a couple of cheesy moments here and there... but the sarcastic humor also balanced out the movie. For Twilight, a fantasy movie, the comedy wasn't awkward at all. In fact, it was appreciated.

Couldn't help thinking that every single person in the Cullen family looks too polished to be real. It's almost creepy! Creamy white skin, perfect hair, intense golden eyes, red lips, perfect complexion, sharp features. They look like mannequins.

Well, I thought the soundtrack was great! :) It featured songs like It Will Rain by Bruno Mars and A Thousand Years by Christina Perri.

Now I can't wait for Part 2! Would I watch Part 1 again? Yeah, I might. ;) See, that's what I'm talking about!

Anastasia

At The Beginning - Donna Lewis Feat.Richard Marx

I came back from classes and decided to unwind with a Disney movie. So, I picked Anastasia.

It was a beautiful tale of self-discovery, hope and romance. A lovely Russian princess reunites with her grandmother in Paris with the help of a handsome commoner, whom she falls in love with. And of course, it's a happy ending.

It reminds me that you need to be happy on your journey and not just when you've reached your destination. Sometimes, the best things in life are discovered on the journey.

I cried at the ending. :')

No matter how cliche Disney cartoons are, they're still heart warmers. Disney cartoons are my favorite; I don't think I'll ever be too old for them.

Forrest Gump

Life's like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.

I finally watched Forrest Gump. Well, better late than never, I guess.

It is a beautiful movie emphasizing love, determination and hope. In case you haven't seen it, it's about a man named Forrest Gump who has a below-average IQ of 75. He's not smart, but he has a heart of gold. He is a wonderful storyteller, simple, honest and downright humble. Throughout his years, he's achieved so much and made a huge impact on many. He finally reunites with the love of his life, a pretty blonde named Jenny. This movie is a powerful tearjerker and addresses some of the main struggles in society. Here's the synopsis.

Several things stood out to me:

  • Just because you're not the brightest tool in the shed doesn't mean you'll always stay behind.
  • Nothing is impossible when you set your mind to it.
  • Miracles happen.
  • God loves you, and He does answer prayers.
  • People always leave because no one is destined to be on earth forever. Hold on to your treasured relationships and be thankful you get to experience love while it lasts.
  • There's a season and a reason for everything.
  • Life gives you lessons; learn from them.
  • You can make an impact on others if you want to.
  • Things may not always go the way you want them to, but trust that something good will come out of it.
  • Your future is not in front of you; it's within you. Make it happen.
  • Strive not only for success, but also for value.
  • Stop living in the past, it won't get you anywhere.
  • Enjoy what you're doing.
Yes, life is like a box of chocolates and you never know what you're gonna get. Accept it and be grateful that you still have a piece of life to enjoy.

Awesome movie. I'd totally watch it again! :)
